22 Travelling Docudays UA in Zakarpattia: Event Digest

This year, the Travelling Docudays UA promises to be especially diverse and warm in Zakarpattia. With film screenings, performances, tours, training sessions, and lectures, we will visit Uzhhorod, Vynohradiv, and Berehove to talk about human rights, the importance of empathy and preserving memory, our involvement in creating change, and our responsibility for the future.


Come, reflect, and be inspired. We are announcing the public part of the festival programme in the region!


5 November, 10:00 a.m.

Uzhhorod. Press conference by the co-organisers of the 22nd Travelling Docudays UA in Zakarpattia: NGO Vested Carpathian Human Rights Agency and NGO Insider Education Centre, featuring the festival’s regional coordinators. Presentation of the festival programme and its central theme.

Location: Uzhhorod Press Club.


11 November, 4:00 p.m.

Uzhhorod. Festival opening in Zakarpattia: screening of the documentary How I Spent My Summer Holidays? and a meeting with the director Antonio Lukich. We will discuss the role of education during the war, the challenges faced by educational institutions, the shaping of an active civic stance among young people and their engagement in community life, as well as the development of empathy and mutual support.

12 November

Uzhhorod, 16:30 — Screening and discussion of the documentary Inside, the Valley Sings by Irish director Nathan Fagan, followed by the creative performance When Flowers Speak — the creation of a living space of memory to remind society of the price of freedom through personal empathy and shared experience.

Location: Zakarpattia Academy of Arts.


13 November

Uzhhorod, 6:00 p.m. — Inclusive screening of the documentary Glass, My Unfulfilled Life by Dutch director Rogier Kappers. Viewers with visual impairments, as well as everyone else who wishes to do so, will be able to watch the film with audio description via the EarCatch app. Afterwards, a discussion will be held on the topic Rare Resource: Hearing to See, featuring Paralympic champion and EarCatch software developer Andrii Demchuk as well as war veterans.

Location: Veteran Hub.


14 November

Vynohradiv, 2:00 p.m. — Inspiration event on How to Find Your Music in Later Years. Screening of the documentary Glass, My Unfulfilled Life by director Rogier Kappers and a discussion in the format of a “warm circle,” followed by an informal conversation over tea accompanied by music. Viewers with visual impairments will be able to watch the film with audio description via the EarCatch app.

Location: Vynohradiv Geriatric Home.


Uzhhorod, 4:00 p.m. Tour titled Lose Cannot Preserve, organised together with the initiative Urban Trees (Uzhhorod) and environmental activist Dzvinka Bilonoh. We will discuss the importance of preserving green areas as part of our shared living space and our responsibility for the environment.

Location: City centre, meeting point — Linden Alley.


17 November, 4:00 p.m.

Uzhhorod. Screening of the documentary Last Song from Kabul by directors Kevin Macdonald and Ruhi Hamid, followed by a discussion dedicated to the issue of protecting human rights in the modern world.

Location: SOS Children’s Villages Uzhhorod.


18 November

Uzhhorod, 10:00 a.m. — Screening of the documentary Inside, the Valley Sings by director Nathan Fagan, followed by a discussion dedicated to the topic of upholding the rights of imprisoned individuals and their social adaptation.

Location: Uzhhorod National University.


Berehove, 3:00 p.m.Safety Online and Offline: How to Counteract Sexual Blackmail. Screening of the documentary My Sextortion Diary by Spanish director Patricia Franquesa, followed by an expert discussion with training elements. We will discuss how to recognise danger online, how to respond to threats and where to seek help, as well as how to create a supportive environment.

Location: Ferenz Rakoczi II Zakarpattia Hungarian University.


19 November

Uzhhorod, 10:00 a.m. — Training on human rights and minority rights protection. We will discuss the fundamental principles of equality and non-discrimination, national and international mechanisms for protecting minority rights, and gain practical knowledge on how to defend one’s rights when interacting with government bodies and civil society organisations. 

Screening of the documentary Where’s My Body Armor? by Ukrainian director Daria Penkova for the Roma community, followed by a discussion on the challenges faced by Ukrainians during the war.

Location: Roma compact settlement.

 

Berehove, 12:00 p.m.Preserving Your Voice: Music, Trauma, and Resilience. Screening of the documentary Last Song from Kabul by directors Kevin Macdonald and Ruhi Hamid for high school students, followed by an expert discussion with training elements. We will talk about the suppression of human rights and cultural genocide, the therapeutic nature of art, overcoming trauma related to forced displacement, and finding inner resources to rebuild life from scratch.

Location: Berehove City Council Centre for Extracurricular Education.


Uzhhorod, 1:00 p.m. — Training on Basic Safety Skills for Protection Against Online Violence. We will discuss the risks of violence on the internet, including those involving artificial intelligence technologies, as well as effective tools for prevention and protection.

Location: Uzhhorod National University.


20 November

Uzhhorod, 10:00 a.m. — Lecture on The Rights of Reintegrated People and People Who Return from Captivity. We will discuss the challenges faced by Ukrainians released from russian captivity, the issues surrounding rehabilitation and reintegration, as well as the involvement of local authorities and civil society organisations.

Location: Uzhhorod National University.


Svaliava, 11:00 a.m. — Art dialogue on Finding Inner Resources. Workshop for people released from russian captivity and for those working with them, focused on discovering inner resources, emotional recovery, and reflecting on personal experience.

Location: Extracurricular Education Centre.


21 November, 4:00 p.m.

Berehove — Interactive cultural and psychological event Reflections on Love, Memory, and the Meaning of Life. Screening of the documentary My Sweet Child by Dutch director Maarten De Schutter followed by a discussion in the “warm circle” format. We will talk about memory and about reflecting on memory through personal stories and the most vivid recollections of the audience, which they will share anonymously on cards. The discussion will be followed by an informal conversation accompanied by music.

Location: Berehove City Council Extracurricular Education Centre.


26 November

Uzhhorod, 4:00 p.m. — Interactive human rights event Living Library, during which participants will have the opportunity to talk with human “books,” people with remarkable life experiences: a woman pastor, a volunteer, a soldier, a civil society activist, a representative of the Roma community, a person with a disability, and an internally displaced person.

Location: F. Potushniak Zakarpattia Regional Universal Science Library.


6:00 p.m. — Festival closing ceremony in Zakarpattia. Screening of the film Sanatorium by Irish director Gar O’Rourke, followed by a discussion dedicated to the topic of humanity, mutual support, and trust during the war. Viewers with visual impairments, as well as anyone interested, will be able to watch the film with audio description via the EarCatch app.
