In Berdyansk human rights were discussed through intuitive drawing

26 October 2021
A series of masterclasses on drawing on the right hemisphere of the brain took place in the Berdyansk Raion as part of the 18th Travelling Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival. The events took place in the general education school №5 and in the premises of Berdyansk City-District Organization of the Red Cross Society of Ukraine. The events were moderated by Larysa Kolomiyets, a certified human rights specialist who also specializes in drawing on the right hemisphere of the brain.

Drawing on the right hemisphere of the brain or intuitive drawing is a technique that helps to "disable" rationality and immerse oneself in the creative process. Larysa Kolomiyets notes, “The method introduced by Betty Edwards, a professor of Art at California State University, aims to "disable" the left hemisphere, which is responsible for logical reasoning. Therefore, in the process of intuitive drawing, a person draws and does not stick the perspective, proportions, etc. This drawing is focused on the process, not the result. That is why learning, search, self-expression, and, of course, creativity become key.”

Drawing on the right hemisphere of the brain became the key to the discussions on childbirth and the problem of human rights violations during it, in particular, in the community of Berdyansk. During the masterclasses, the participants unleash not only their creative potential, but also their cognitive functions, and get rid of nervous tension. Intuitive drawing revealed the hidden possibilities of each person, as well as laid the groundwork for future actions. The audience passionately discussed ways of overcoming post-traumatic syndrome after the birth of a child with a disability, protection of the rights of mothers and fathers, and newborns. Some participants shared their methods of overcoming post-traumatic stress disorder after childbirth and the challenges of raising children with disabilities.

Besides, the idea of conducting an informational advocacy campaign emerged during the discussion in the Berdyansk City-District Organization of the Red Cross Society of Ukraine. The participants drew attention to the possibility of distributing printed materials with QR-codes in medical institutions and antenatal clinics and agreed to develop the project.
