10th International Documentary Film Festival on Human Rights Docudays UA - in the towns and villages of Ukraine.
Jubilee Festival Docudays UA takes place under the motto "There is a Choice!" The main idea is that the examples of documentary heroes from different countries show the Ukrainian viewers that each of us always has a choice: to accept authoritarian, dictatorial regime, or fight for the victory of democracy, go to protests or sit at home while others protesting; require transparency and openness in decision-making from authorities or giving bribes; tolerate domestic violence or fight it.
Travelling Festival is a traditional continuation of the International Documentary Film Festival on Human Rights Docudays UA, which was held in Kyiv from 22 to 28 March this year. 81 films from 31 countries were preented at the festival: from Canada, USA, China, Great Britain, Iceland, Scotland, Australia, Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Tunisia, Syria, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Serbia, Finland, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Congo, Italy, Croatia, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.
This year the festival in Kiev was attended by 32,680 spectators, and traveling festival in 2012 – by 113,000, 80% of them were young people.
44 documentaries on human rights (including the series "Roma dream", two documentary anthology "Open Access" and "Out of Euro" selection of animations), which were presented at Docudays UA in Kyiv, and screened as part of Travelling Film Festival Docudays UA. They were seen in more than 100 cities, towns and villages of 22 regions of Ukraine: in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovs’k, Zaporizhzha , Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyrovohrad, Lviv, Luhansk, Poltava, Kherson, Chernihiv, Chernivtsi, Ternopil, Volyn, Donetsk, Zhytomyr, Kharkiv, Vinnitsa, Odessa, Sumy, Transcarpathian, Mykolaiv, Rivne regions, and people of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, cities of Kyiv and Sevastopol .
Festival films demonstration takes place from October to December inclusively in theaters, houses of culture, universities, schools, youth clubs, bookstores, libraries, colonies etc. The effect of watching movies amplifies by meetings with prominent human rights activists, filmmakers, cultural figures and artists; thematic debates, discussions, disputes, workshops on legal issues in youth audiences, forum-theaters, "living libraries" and other educational events.
Festival is non-political and non-profit and can be attended for free.
During the 10th Travelling Film Festival Docudays UA at least 115,000 viewers (including min. 70% of young people) in 110 cities, towns and villages of Ukraine will see the best modern documentaries, learn more about human rights, methods of protection, effortlessly be confirmed in the sense of human dignity as the highest value; get acquainted with the activities of at least 48 NGOs and will be able to join them.
Travelling Docudays UA - for pupils and students
This year Docudays UA continues to focus on improving educational programs on human rights for youth, students, pupils, teachers. Thereby within the Travelling Film Festival this year there is a special pilot program : " Documentary Film at Schools: lessons on legal awareness and civic engagement", which aims to bring the average Ukrainian high school students and pupils to civic activity, upholding their rights, the rights of their friends or their fellow community.
Travelling Docudays UA for penitentiary institutions
A special program «Docudays UA for penitentiary institutions" keeps working, within which festival films and discussions with human rights defenders will run in not less than 30 colonies and prisons of Ukraine, in educational institutions for future employees of the penitentiary system. Prisoners and prison employees of colony will learn more about human rights and will be able to establish a civilized dialogue in the legal field, students will have the opportunity to discuss the festival films with human rights activists and discuss the problems that exist in the colonies, and the ways of its solving. Thus, through Docudays UA we lay in the minds of students the concept of human dignity, human rights, respect for the rights of prisoners at the training stage of future penitentiary institutions employers.
Docudays UA Cinema Club
It has become a tradition that those who once visited the festival come again and bring their friends. People call and write to us from all over Ukraine asking: where to find a movie they have seen at the festival? Teachers want to use these documentaries in discussions in the lessons of law.
That is why this year International Documentary Film Festival on Human Rights Docudays UA for the first time in Ukraine introduces systematic use of documentaries in the field of human rights education and begins to create permanent film club at schools, universities, public organizations and in the colonies and institutions of the penitentiary system.
There is a creation of two films collection for different audiences in the nearest future. Experts of Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union have already been working on developing manuals for using films in educational work.
We believe that every truly artistic documentary is a powerful act of moral struggle, and therefore democratic values. It is a tool that awakening in people human, teaching and inspiring protection of human in ourselves and others.
