A Human Rights Discussion on Overcoming the Legacy of a Repressive Past

At a discussion marking the 35th anniversary of the adoption of Ukraine’s first law on victims of political repression, we will talk about overcoming the legacy of a repressive past.

On April 17, 1991, Ukraine condemned political repression and recognized the persecution of millions of people on political, social, national, and religious grounds. The law provided not only for legal rehabilitation but also for the return of property, compensation for unlawful imprisonment, and the restoration of housing, employment, and pension rights. How did this decision change the approach to historical justice, and what issues remain relevant today?

Expert: Vasyl Donets, regional representative of the Human Rights Commissioner.

Moderator: Demetiy Bilyi.
