Coffee with Human Rights Activists: “The Language of Justice in War: Between Victims’ Expectations and Justice”
Discussion with experts
A Conversation with a Lawyer About the Limits of Justice in War
Discussion with the experts
More than 226,000 criminal cases have been opened in Ukraine for war crimes, which means hundreds of thousands of victims are waiting for justice. At the same time, the gap between these expectations and the actual capacity of the justice system is growing.
During the discussion, we will talk about how this gap is forming and what role public communication plays in it. How do the media, human rights defenders, and the state influence the understanding of responsibility for war crimes and other international crimes, and what gets oversimplified or lost in the process?
We will also examine the perspective of the victims: what justice means to them, how their expectations align with the capabilities of the justice system, and what factors outside the courtroom influence their sense of whether justice has been achieved.
This is a conversation about the limits of justice in war and how to discuss them honestly—without illusions, but also without cynicism.
Expert: Tamila Bespala, attorney.
