Nazarii, a grey-haired music teacher from the small but picturesque Ukrainian town of Zalishchyky, is preparing his modest ensemble for a spring concert featuring the composition “Paint Me a Night.” Funeral marches, which are heard more and more often in the town, are turning him into a military conductor. The same ferry that once carried Zalishchyky residents across the Dniester now runs night after night.
